Analysis of Student Work (ASW)
In the next few weeks you will be notified by your staff development chair that the ASW course validation process is active. You will receive step-by-step instructions to complete the process. Once your courses have been validated, the platform will select either 5 courses (for year-long classes) or 2 courses for the Fall semester (or 2nd quarter for YR) [3 courses will be identified in January for the Spring semester].
At this point it would be most helpful for you to plan the objectives for which you will gather evidence. Continue to share ideas in your PLTS and email me if you have any questions.
An important point about ASW - this is an exceptional opportunity for the arts to demonstrate our value in supporting student growth in our content area. It is a chance of a lifetime. Choose your objectives carefully - keep it simple - make sure you align your objective selection/instruction/evidence gathering. All arts, world language, healthful living teachers will participate in the ASW process. Part-time employees will be evaluated on Standards I, IV, and VI (which for us is via ASW).

As it might take a little time for our website to be updated, I have decided to go ahead and send it directly to you. Please feel free to share the attachment and this email with your Instrumental Music nominees and their music teachers/band directors. Some points of note:
1. This was developed by Governor's School instrumental music faculty, some of whom will serve as judges in February. Their intent is to give nominees options and guidance on the level of expertise sought at auditions in preparation for the summer program. With that, in contrast to more prescriptive auditions, we're also looking at the selection decisions these students make, reflective of how they gauge their own expertise.
2. Remember that this is for the Solo Performance part of the audition. There is also a brief Sight-Reading part. Obviously, the sight-reading piece will not be sent out prior to auditions. Nominees should practice those skills independently.
3. Read the Instructions at the top of page 1. They give important details (e.g., instruments, length of selections, making a good choice, finding music, etc.). Percussion nominees should read the information especially closely. More info is also on the Governor's School website (www.ncgovschool.org<http://www.ncgovschool.org>).
4. Each Performing/Visual Arts nominee (from all five arts areas) will receive an individual letter in the mail at home in early to mid-January. This letter will give more detailed and specific info for his/her audition.
You'll receive the information via a PPT through email.
